AND........... the plot thickens !!! After reading the first book in this series ‘Boxer Hobo’, I could hardly wait for the next book for the where, who, what and when !!! I was not expecting this hilarious, exhilarating read.In his first book of the series ‘Boxer Hobo’, you are introduced to a homeless alcoholic who uses boxing to motivate him off the grog. Suffering with brain injury following a ‘king hit’ attack, the desperate yet hilarious antics of the Hobo leave the reader eager to discover the rest of his story. I won’t give away the plot of the first book, except to say that it is well worth reading.
This new release called ‘The President’ continues the storyline where the Hobo is back with his wife and has two babies, BUT still desperate to find a ‘fair fight’ within the industry. But alas !!! he is continuously used and abused by those in the know, and on occasion, not only ‘falls off the wagon’ but JUMPS off it......
Even with his delicate, injured brain, Johnny Noctor is a very clever writer with a rather brilliant mind who has written a story jam packed full of hilarious commentary and intriguing events. In parts it is rather sad, but this guy has the courage to take on the corrupt promoters who did him wrong and also the Police who hid important witness statements from his attack in the dark streets of Hobart.
I wait patiently in anticipation for the next book... Good for you Johnny T Noctor. FIGHT !!!

Coming off the tail of "Boxer Hobo", we're immediately thrust back into the world of hard-hitting hobo Johnny Noctor as he tries, not always successfully, to navigate through the shark-infested waters of Australian boxing while steering with a damaged and occasionally inebriated brain. It's hard not to be inspired by someone who's been through as much as Noctor has and is still running up mountains, spouting poetry, and challenging corruption in both the boxing world and the Tasmanian police department. All of that comes through here just as in "Boxer Hobo", portrayed in the Hobo's powerful prose.
The book does suffer from a couple flaws missing from "Boxer Hobo", though. The peaks and valleys of Noctor's boxing escapades become predictably cyclical after a while, and the "Why can't I get a break?" starts descending from its previous state of an Olympian call for justice into more of a recurring whine. And the real shame of the book is that when the climax comes, you'll likely blink and miss it like I did -- I didn't even realize the impact of what I'd read until the 3rd book filled me in. An editor would have been useful for this book, I think. But none of this should be taken as a reason to skip it. This book is an essential element of the Hobo's journey!
Overall, "Boxer Hobo" and "The President" together would make an excellent true-life story on the level of Ron Howard's "Cinderella Man" starring Russell Crowe (although I'd get Jason Statham to play the lead).
Initially I read the first book released by the author, within a weekend....such a fast read...and the most unusual writing style I've come across. This prequel did not disappoint. Apart from enjoying the obscure humor of this lovable larrikan; there is a seriousness to this story which is at times sad, yet intriguing. There is some strong language used and some episodes demonstrating the harsh reality of the boxing world, especially for the hobo; but sometimes strong language is required to get the message of the hobo's frustration across to the reader. Another good quick read.
