This book combined a great fictional story with very detailed descriptions of places and events. I like the combination of a good story line, well developed characters yet meaty details - felt as if I learned more about the people and villages of Uganda. An inspiring story of how we are never to old to move in new directions, never to old to trust our heart, and never too old to listen to God. Great read!
How often does a novel 's character touch your heart from the beginning and make you want to know her personally? In this reader's opinion, not often enough. But Route to Survival's Kate Mitchell is so real that I felt an instant empathy for her and interest in the path she chooses. Everyone has hardships and losses in life; it's how we deal with them that makes the difference. Kate leads by example. I'm hoping a sequel is on the horizon..
This book is very well written; tight prose, evokes feelings, paints pictures. A joy to read.
The story is fascinating, and you will want to spend more time with the well-developed characters.
The author's descriptions of the various locales transforms you to the places. . Vivid pictures of the environment and situations. The book ended too quickly, I wanted more time with Kate. This is an excellent work by a first-time novelist, and I look forward to more. House guests picked up the book during a recent visit, and they couldn't put it down. Was the source of good discussion during their visit.!
Held our interest. At times thought I wa reading an autobiography.
We just vacationed on Beaver Island in the middle of Lake Michigan, where a large portion of this book takes place. Very interesting and enjoyable.
A very good read with a protagonist who takes control of her life and makes ethical choices based on her beliefs. She is maybe a little braver than most of us, but the author does make us understand her choices. Kate is someone I would love to have for a friend. I am eager to read another book by this author.
Sue's first novel takes place in an exotic setting for much of the story, which gives the reader a lot of information about a place that is mostly little-known in America. The situation, at the beginning of the story, of the main character, Kate, is one often faced by other women of that age and older. Her decisions are often surprising, but work out well for Kate, even though one of them put her in grave danger. This is a story not only of survival, but of hope.
